Mobic is the brand name for the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (or NSAID) meloxicam. It is given in a wide variety of treatment options and is sold by prescription only. It has some side effects and risks but is generally well received in patients.
Why Mobic is Used
Mobic, or meloxicam, is given for pain, tenderness, stiffness, and swelling. It is a pain reliever for conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthrtitis. It is used for other indications as well, whenever a non-narcotic pain reliever is needed, but arthritis is the more common condition it is prescribed for.
Mobic Precautions
You should not take Mobic if you are allergic to aspirin, other NSAIDs, or meloxicam. You should let your doctor be aware of any vitamins, minerals, nutritional supplements, or herbal remedies you are taking. You should also tell your doctor if you are taking any of these drugs: ACE inhibitors, diuretics, Questran, lithium, or Rheumatrex.
Mobic Side Effects
Some of the more common side effects of this pain reliever are diarrhea, gas, sore throat, constipation, cough, and a runny nose. Some of the more serious side effects that may be experienced in persons taking Mobic are fever, blisters, rash, hives, itching, back pain, nausea, weight gain, fast heart beat, pale skin, and hoarseness. Others that can be serious are lack of energy, tiredness, difficulty swallowing, difficulty breathing, jaundice, pain in right upper section of the stomach, flu-like symptoms, difficult or painful urination, or bloody/cloudy/discolored urine. Lastly, swelling in the face, tongue, eyes, lips, arms, hands, throat, feet, ankles, or legs should be reported to your doctor.
Mobic Dosage
The maximum recommended dosage of Mobic per day for adults is 15 milligrams. Those who are patients with hemodialysis, the maximum is reduced to only 7.5 milligrams per day. Mobic is taken by mouth in either a liquid or a tablet. It is typically prescribed for once a day and can be taken with or without food. Take the tablet or liquid at the same time every day and exactly as it is prescribed from your doctor. If it is a suspension, you should shake it up before you take it each day to mix it evenly.
Mobic, or the generic meloxicam, is a nice middle ground in pain management. When over-the-counter drugs are too weak and you don’t want a narcotic, Mobic may be the NSAID for you.
